SCHNECETADY, NY - Twenty one players including Nazareth College Freshman Brendan Draper who traveled by bus from Rochester, four coaches and a trainer assembled an Irish National team at Union College on Sunday morning, October 14th, and then beat all three opponents in the Bruce Allison Fall Lacrosse Tournament.
Opening against the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons, Team Ireland's Brian Murray scored four times on the way to a 9-4 victory. James McAleavey fired in two goals, and Martin Dunn, Kevin Owens and Reggie Thearle also scored for the green, orange and white. Goalies Sean Murphy and Connor Sweeney each held the Dragons to two goals in his half of the game.
After a five minute break, Ireland took the field again to play the Nichols College Bisons. The Irish led 4-1 at halftime and won 7-2 with two more goals by Murray and scores from Justin Doran, Martin Dunn, Mike Giarusso and Doug Needham. Sweeney and Murphy each held the Bisons to one goal during his half between the pipes.
The Union Dutchmen had also beaten the Dragons and Bisons by a combined score of 20-3, setting up a match of undefeated teams for the tournament's final game.
With a much larger roster than Team Ireland, Union's attack controlled the ball for much of the first half, but several good saves by Sean Murphy held the Dutchmen's lead to 4-2 at halftime.
Team Ireland then came from behind with the first three goals of the second half, fell behind 6-5 after Union scored twice, and then scored three straight goals again for an 8-6 win. Henry Bartlett and Tom Dunn each scored twice for Ireland in the game, and Kevin Shadiack, Giarusso, McAleavey and Murray also scored. Connor Sweeney held Union to two goals in the second half, and Kevin Owens also had an outstanding day handling faceoffs for Team Ireland.
Other players contributing to Team Ireland's wins included mid-fielders Brendan Draper, and John Payne, and defensemen Michael Conway, Kevin Carroll, Ross Griswold, Chris Harris, Sean Monahan and Dan Nolan.
Irish Lacrosse Foundation President Richie Moran, and Board Members Tom Prior and Tim Weir served as team coaches, along with Bob Deegan. Board members John Cavanaugh and Dick Pepper served as team trainer and as tournament official.
With lots of assistance from Anne Murphy, treasurer Jim Carroll ran a very successful fund-raising effort off the field, generating an income of $2,800 from apparel sales, donations, and new ILF memberships. Board member Larry Griswold, and his wife Barbara, picked up and delivered the team's pre and post tournament food and drink and assisted with other matters.
"A lot of people stepped up to help the team that day", said Moran, "and I want to thank them all. We always need more workers, and the staff we had was a big part of our success."
